By Dr. Sanish Chandra

Recently, I had the opportunity to interact with 110 newly joined Management Trainees from across disciplines at the Indian Institute of Coal Management (IICM), Ranchi. I conducted two sessions of around 90 minutes each on the importance of Collaboration and Networking in the professional journey. Most of them were fresh graduates, now stepping into their roles as desk or field managers. During our discussions, it became clear that many were finding it challenging to transition from college life to the complexities of the workplace. They expressed a genuine need for training, exposure to procedures, and guidance in understanding daily operations. I strongly felt they needed not just training, but handholding and appreciation from seniors. Without proper grooming, they may struggle to build a strong association with the organisation and might eventually start looking elsewhere. It reminded me of my time in the Indian Air Force, where training and mentorship were given top priority. Seniors played a big role in shaping our path, often becoming our role models. Grooming a subordinate, I believe, requires patience, empathy, and the willingness to listen without ego. When done well, it not only helps in delegation but also builds a strong and effective team. After all, a true leader is one who creates more leaders. On Networking, I found many of them unfamiliar with how impactful it can be. We discussed how building meaningful professional relationships can open doors, solve challenges, and support career growth. Towards the end, I shared 20 habits to avoid as a leader from the book “What Got You Here Won’t Get You There.” One simple but powerful lesson was: When someone praises you, don’t deflect. Just say “Thank You.” That’s all that’s needed sometimes. I truly enjoyed the interaction and look forward to engaging more with young professionals—sharing whatever little I have learnt on my journey so far.
